Called to worship
Have you ever wonder why most worship services are constructed the way they are? I did until I took a class in undergrad that highlighted some of these points. Once you see the significant of the purpose of the worship service you should appreciate it more than before. But it should not stop there, because worship is should be personal, giving worth and honor that is transformational. So let see what the purpose is of the worship service.
The purpose of the worship service is to come to Jesus and to be transformed. So before we formally invite the Holy Spirit among us we should come full of praise. When in the sanctuary we should praise the Lord.
“Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; Sing praises on the harp to our God, Who covers the heavens with clouds,
Who prepares rain for the earth, Who makes grass to grow on the mountains. He gives to the beast its food,
And to the young ravens that cry. He does not delight in the strength of the horse; He takes no pleasure in the legs of a man. The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him, In those who hope in His mercy. Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem!
Praise your God, O Zion!”
As we sing songs they should get softer as we get closer to the formal call to worship. We enter into the formal call of worship through the song of Invocation preparing our hearts to receive the Holy Spirit as we invite the God of the universe into the sanctuary. After we welcome God in among us we need to welcome each other, reciting why we are in God’s house sharing among ourselves as a family the things God has done for us.
It is now time to show God that we appreciate who he is and what he has done. This starts through monetary giving. We then should see who we are to God as we enter into his presence through corporate prayer. Lastly we will hear God through his word. First by reading the of Scripture than we experience God in the word through a special musical piece, ending lastly in practical application by the Pastor through preaching. As the preacher wraps up the sermon it will be should be accompanied with music. Finally, we leave God house with the Benediction.
However, this is not all. This should be the mode of your personal worship act as well. You should go through this model everyday as you worship before God. Enter into his presence through praise. Invite the Holy Spirit into your worship time and testify to God how great He is. Give God your heart as your offering and thank him throughout your prayer. Read God’s word and think of practical application for the new day. End this time of reflection in prayer and I guarantee that you will be blessed by your call to worship.
